If you are on the redecorating buzz then you need to learn how to work with texture. Textures are as important as colours though they do not get the same focus as colours most of the time. So what do we mean by texture? Texture refers to the not just the colours of the items in a room but also their shape, pattern and overall makeup. If a room has limited variety of texture it can feel bland.
The key to designing a wonderfully warm and comfortable home is adding many layers of texture in your rooms. You need to mix and match the different colours and patterns as you add texture so you get a real contrast. Have a look at some stylish rooms in magazines or online and you will see that they are almost always composed with a range of different textures, they will make use of wood, white walls, bold couches and so on. If you have a space that is all smooth white, or is all wood, it will look to bland and overpowering at the same time.
To help you out, here are some tips on decorating using texture.
Rugs: Rugs are a great way of adding texture. With a rug you can contrast the texture of the floor with the rug so make sure that you choose a rug that complements the type of flooring you have. If you have a wooden flooring then you may want to go for a relatively plain one, if you have a plain carpeted floor then you might want to go for something with a pattern to create more interest. The other great thing about rugs is that you can swap them around easily so you can create new textures whenever you want.
Furniture finishes: A great way of getting texture in your house is to have furniture made using different materials. Imagine a room where all the furniture was natural wood, it would look quite intense and a bit dull. Think of having a room where all the furniture was the same colour, again it would be dull and intense. That is why it pays to mix and match furniture. Have a few wooden pieces, a few made with metal and leather and a few fabric. That way you get a variety of textures that will make the room more interesting.
Accessories: You can have lots of fun with accessories and they are a really simple way of adding textures. You can use glass, mirrors, fabrics and lots of other materials to give your room a more varied and interesting look. If you have a very plain room with white walls and plain floors then you can add lots of texture using accessories. You can have shelves with loads of interesting items on them that give your room depth and interest.
